timing issue?
« on: May 21, 2011, 10:30:03 am »
So I have been trying to get my truck running right. Its a 85 k10 with a 305 and a 700r4. I have traced and fixed every vacuum leak in the engine compartment. I have a Holley 4160 600cfm carb with electric choke a performer intake and and msd cap and coil and a brand new ignition module. The problem I am having is that at idle, mostly after the choke opens up the engine will sometimes bog down but it will come right back up, and when I'm going down the road and i go past about a quarter throttle the engine sounds like its not timed up properly but at idle it seems fine. I have adjusted the timing over and over and over again and it still does it. The truck doesn't have a timing tab on it so I cant use a timing light although I do have one. Also at idle when I rev it up the timing doesn't sound as off but I get a huge amount of white smoke. And as it aways does it kinda back fires through the carb, I beleive it also does that going down the road but its not as easy to tell. I had replaced the spark plugs with ac delco premium or something only about 500 miles ago along with napa plug wires. But my dad swears its the spark plugs. He says to go to a dealership and buy stock sparkplugs. I am stumped but I am going to try new plugs and wires if i can get to a new dealership soon. What do you guys think it might be? I have also taken out each spark plug and double checked all the gaps and cleaned the plrongs off with 320 grit sand paper to make sure they have good contacts for the spark.

Do you still have the original distributor in the engine?
