TH350 Issues, could use some help troubleshooting.
« on: July 05, 2011, 06:15:24 pm »
I've got a 1981 c10 with a solid 350 in it. It's running a 78 quadrajet. It's running rich and the idle is too high, which I know are adjustments I can make easily, but have yet to get around to them.

The main issue I'm having is the TH350 doesn't want to shift right away. There's no trouble shifting between Drive, Park, and Reverse. The issue is that once I'm in drive and go to accelerate the engine will rev high and not shift into second or third depending on where I am. I end up having to go 10mph over the limit to get it to kickdown and then I can decelerate. My truck doesn't have a tach, but I can tell the RPM's are high and that it should have shifted.

It doesn't seem to do it all the time, but it's often enough for me to raise an eyebrow about it.

I just bought the truck a few months ago and fixed it up enough to pass inspection. I bought it as a daily driver.

The fluids were all changed shortly before I bought it. The transmission fluid is clear and fresh, and the levels are correct.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Is the vacuum hooked to the transmission?  That could also be the cause of your high idle if it is unhooked down by the transmission.

Not sure, never messed around with transmissions previously. How do I go about checking?

In stock form there is a steel line that goes from the intake manifold, to the transmission modulator "I think that is what it is called" on the passenger side of the transmission.  There is a short rubber hose at the modulator.  The steel line at the intake manifold in stock for is back by the distributor if I remember right.  I am not an automatic fan so this is going from memory.  I am sure the experts will correct me if I am misleading...
