no smog check in california...
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:04:59 am »
speaking about my 74 350 Chevy. Anybody in California who knows, please chime in. My truck doesn't require of smog check, does that mean I can take out the AIR pump and be legal to drive on the streets? I don't know law wise, but we don't have any visual inspections, nothing. Only way really is being pulled over. I want to take all this AIR pump off because it's such a clutter. Thanks.

Technically, you font have to test yet any smog equipment included on the vehicle at purchase,is required to stay on the vehicle. But, if your like millions of people, youll just remove it and get on with your life. I have a california truck and it was loaded with smog equipment. I registered my truck in globe at my uncles address and I dont have to smog test. So I removed all vacuum lines except the vac advance. And I removed cat converter, air pump, put headers on, removed vacuum cabister,

No check, but doesnt make it legal. Just dont give a cop a reason to pop the hood, in fact, they dont need reasonable suspicion to pop the hood. Do they check? Usually just on rice burners.

And if they check, just act dumb and say that it was this way when you bought it.  That said, I used to live in CA and had a 1982 diesel Suburban that would blow blue smoke going down the road and burn a quart of oil every 100 miles.  I had to drive this vehicle because my 1988 Cadillac Eldorado would not pass smog.  So I had to drive the dirty old Suburban instead because they didn't smog it.  So much for CA and their stupid laws.  I now live in TX and don't have to worry about all of this and the cost of living here is so much less.

like said in ca and most other states if it came from the factory with a cat or any emissions system it has to have that to pass inspection. i have historic tags on my 79 if i was to get pulled over and gave a cop a hard time they could get me for every part of it from no cats no  mufflers no emissions at all. but if i would take it easy then they usually dont bother.

Both my Chevy and my Ford are Cali trucks. The Chevy a 73 and the Ford a 75 both came with Evaporative Emissions and the ford also had cats. When i lived in Cali i had to have that stuff on them when i took them for smog checks. but that was 20 years ago or so. When i got permanently assigned to were i am in Nevada i took all that stuff off.
I'm thinking that 73 was the first year for evap.and 75 was the first year for cats. at least i think i read that somewhere

I'm a little surprised that a 74 even has a smog pump, but then my 74 has an egr on it, which I've never seen on one before. And my emissions sticker says its supposed to be there.

A.I.R. pumps started in Cali in 1969, and EGR not long after.....So don't be too surprised at your '74 having them...
