Which 350 to pick?
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:58:40 pm »
I have a couple options here.

My friend has two 350 engines.  One is out of a 99 has about 100,000 miles on it and the came went after an intake gasket replacement.  The engine went because of the distributor not being tightened down properly and grinding out the cam.

Main questions - all I'd have to do is get all the shavings out of the oil pan and then put in a new cam and then an efi to carb intake.

Or - he has a bare block 350 4-bolt main 1-piece rear seal that needs to be redone.

I have a line on a set of new heads, but the machining is going to be the big hurdle on this one, along with a rebuild kit.

Which one would you choose and why?  Will I have any problems bolting the 99 up to my transmission and such in my 85 2wd?

If I was to use the 1st one I would still send it off to a machine shop to get new cam bearings installed, bore honed, and have everything else inspected.

Me I would go with number just due to the heads are already there with them being vortec. You would be just a porting and valve job away from some good power and torque with the right cam.
