Help me ID my engine?
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:16:37 pm »
This engine is in my '73 K15, and for the life of me, I can not find out what it came out of. The lettering I can read with 99% surety, but these codes don't seem to match with anything!

From the stamp on the platform just behind the alternator:
VP504ZFC
1E5106830

From what I can see online, that second digit P doesn't work!

Best I've been able to find is that it's an '84 corvette 350 TPI automatic. It's set up on a manual trans with a quadrajet carb though, so I'm second guessing my research on that one.

I'm confused. Maybe one of you veterans know a bit about this, and can help me out. Thanks!

for one you need the other numbers on the back driver side of the engine. also that p prob is a 0

Do you mean that in this labeling system the P = 0, or that I'm misreading it?
I've not heard much about the numbers on the back, any images that show specifically where they are or anything? I can't seem to find them.

Thanks!

the number you have listed i think you miss read it its the engine number the number in the rear is the casting number
the front numbers will tell you when and where it was made along with the sequence number. the rear numbers will tell you c.i. years 2-4 bolt

I thought I misread it as well, but I assure you I didn't. I can take a picture if you'd like. I spent a good 6 hours trying to make sense of it myself, must have rechecked that second character 5 times.

I was under the impression that the suffix on the engine code will tell you a bit about what it is, but the ZFC suffix is for a 350 with TPI and an automatic, where mine has a carb and a manual. That combined with the P in the code has me wondering what's going on. lol.

I will check for the casting code tomorrow, hopefully something will give!

Curious why it matters what it came out of?  Are you trying to confirm that it is a 350? or a TPI 350?
ZFC = 1984 350 Tuned port inj, a/t L83 205hp TPI Vette

The engine codes is stamps as follows
Letter = Plant it was built at.
options are F =Flint (Motor), S= Saginaw Service, H =Hydramatic, T=Tonawanda, K= St. Catherines, Ontario, V=Flint (Engine), M=GM of Mexico
Month = 2 digit month, 01-12
Day = 2 digit day
