LT1 HELP
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:38:31 am »
Have 87 silveraldo 4 wd with a 3 speed auto just came across a low mileage 1996 LT1
That came with everything like the computer wiring harness ect.the 305 that's in the truck seems ok just really want just a little more performance. Question is will this engine work with the current 3 speed auto. Will the headers off the 305 work on the lt.I'm assuming other than air compressor clearance everything eles is easy

In my opinion, you won't be too happy with the lt1 if you do a lot of towing. Car motors aren't as torquey as the truck engines. And changing the cam may do weird things to the computer. Not too sure if thats 100% accurate, but someone will prolly pipe up if I'm wrong.

Also, if depending on the deal, you can find the 5.3 LS engine with harness in for what some people seem to think their LT1's are worth.

Thanks for the reply to be honest I don't really do much towing
And i didn't compare the specs of the LT vs a 305 2 barrel
I just assumed the LT would be a big improvement
I only have $425 into the complete engine it has 72k on it.
I did find out the engine will work with the turbo 350
But it will have issues is what I'm told. So if I go with this engine
Guess I need to upgrade the trans as well. There's nothing wrong
With the 305 that's in it other than a complete lack of balls
I am open to any and all suggestions

I have a friend that just got a complete 6.0 lsx from a wrecking yard for 500. GMPP makes an kit to install a TH400 behind one, its something to do with the crank trigger I think.

Try getting the computer flashed to delete the trans, or find one from a stick shift car, that'll solve any trans issues.

Cubic inches is the best fix for that.

You will be happy with the LT1, they make good power, and you can use a TH350.

You will have to tune the ECM and provide a sensor for speed for the ECM.

I knew i was doing something wrong!

as far as the lt1 goes is it iron or aluminum headed? at this point in its life you can probably tell by looking at it. if it's iron, id sell it. if its aluminum, id probably still sell it, just for more money. If you're gonna spend a bunch of money on a swap, swap to something reliable.
