Have you ran the truck with the inspection plate removed? The inspection plat on my truck got bent at the top and rubbed against my fly wheel. Made kind of a similar sound.

Im going to say he didnt have an inspection plate on because he unbolted the torque converter.

I pulled the tranny and took off the flexplate. It isn't cracked. If it is warped could it make this noise?The engine is a new GM 350. I hope the bearing isn't spun. I primed it before the first start.  That would really suck.

I feel like an idiot. After dropping the trans and checking the flexplate I put it back on started it up. After cursing for an hour and downing a few beers I decided to remove the starter. The noise went away.  Sucks that I have to put the trans back on but at least it should be a cheap fix.
