Open Headers collector pipe?
« on: December 03, 2012, 11:29:47 pm »
If I wanted to run open headers on my truck (yeah i know you can lose low end) , would about 10 inches of pipe coming off each header be considered a collector pipe?  And, that's what people use to keep cold air from hitting the valves,  is that correct?

Thanks guys  8)

Hmm, I remember when I was 16 and thought open headers on a street rig sounded awesome!  ;D
Should at least run some sort of muffler, even if its a straight through design.

lol I'm not a teenager.  My truck is an 82 GMC sierra with a built 350 (not my daily, just a toy), right now I have true duals with flowmaster super 10 single chamber mufflers.  It sounds great, and its quite loud, but I'd just like it a bit louder.

i dont really have an answer for ya... but just want to comment on what blazin said.... i also remember when i was 16-17 and i bought my first truck i wanted to have open headers but my dad thought i was crazy... and i thought it was cool.... never took the muffler out... now im 23 and i dont think its cool any more, actually think its kinda of annoying driving on the highway at 70mph and hearing all the noise like its some kind of jet engine.... for the record my first truck was a 95 chevy pick up with a 305 5sp, now i have a 74 chevy stepside with a 350 4sp

Yeah, different strokes for different folks I guess.  Loud roaring in the cab doesn't bother me at all, I have my current pipes turned down right behind the bed.

On a stock truck i would agree it's a bit silly to run open headers, but on a built motor I love the sound, but I understand it's not for everybody.

Loud can be fun and I'm no where close to being young.  I've pretty much gone away from loud exhaust on my trucks but my bike is a whole other story. Nothing like a big ole air cooled v-twin rumbling through 3" dia straight pipes.

Concerning the noise, how does the local LEO react to loud exhaust? I know of some places where all that loud gets you is unwanted attention!  Have you considered running a set of cutouts?  I don't remember where I saw it but I saw a set of electrically controlled cutouts.  That could help you avoid hassles but be loud when needed.

Long tube headers should be more than enough to keep cool air from reaching the valves but what are you going to do with the heat?  I would think that a run of straight pipe with a turndown would help reduce the heat reaching to floor of the cab area.

I second the cutouts, extend the cutout outlet just under the bed and turn them down there, and run the primary exhaust through a long glasspack or the like to mellow it a little. Cruising through a residential neighborhood at midnight with open headers is a good way to get extra holes where you don't want them.

The law around here don't seem to care about loud vehicles at all, so I don't really have to worry about cutouts.

As far as heat hitting the cab, I was just gonna do about 10 inches of pipe with a turndown off each header.

Depending upon how well your cab is sealed, you might consider going to at least under the bed with the pipe so you don't risk asphyxiation at a stoplight.

haha yeah that would be bad.  Right now even though my truck has mufflers the pipes are turned down under the back of the cab.

i know im a little late getting in on this but i hate being the guy always asking questions and not giving anything back :P anyway i just got my truck done, its an 86 k10 with sightly over stock 350, n when i first got it going i just ran headers for a few days n then i took a glass pack system off a different truck i parted out n chopped it up so it dumps right behind the cab. anyway that sounds really good! it sounds like open headers but my ears dont ring anymore lol. although i actually want it quieter even though im 17, bc its a dd n i have trouble talking to my gf ;) but when im just goofing off its great! if i ever have the money for a fun truck thats what im doing!
