oil leak
« on: March 08, 2012, 03:43:42 pm »
I am going to be repairing a oil leak between my trans and adapter. Was wondering if there is suppose to be a gasket or a o ring between the two or or just rtv sealant. Trans is a 700r4 going to a 208 adapter ( long version )

If you are talking about the outside of the transmission and transfer case, then the answer is no. (Don't use rtv on it either, it will be that much harder to take apart)  Where the shaft that comes out of the transmission and where it goes into the transfer case both have seals to seal the shaft. (The adapter/bell housings themselves do not fill up with oil, that would be a lot of oil)
If you have a leak this is where it is going to be leaking from.

You are going to have to separate the trans and transfer case to get to the seals, at that point you will have to determine if it is the trans or transfer case seal that is leaking.
