Strongest spray adhesive?
« on: May 25, 2012, 08:16:16 pm »
I need to find the strongest spray adhesive that I can buy. I bought some carpet from ACC:

http://www.accmats.com/

Which is where anyone will tell you to get your carpet from. They use a thick plastic backing. I just bought a strip a year ago and cut it and glued it up to the back of the cab. The 3M brand spray carpet adhesive obviously wasn't up to the task, cause it let go. Guess it couldn't take the texas heat. So this time, I don't want to waste my time with the standard spray adhesive that 3M or would have me use. I'm looking for the strongest stuff out there. What is it?

Landau Top and Trim. Used out of a normal spray gun with a large tip. Like a 2.2. Best there is.

If your carpet piece goes up to the inside metal skin under your rear window fasten it there with something and glue the rest.

Hard to find, but here it is:

Looks like a 5 gallon bucket lol. Wish I could find it in like 1/2 gallon. Maybe this stuff would suffice:

.

Yeah I got it up under there to hold it while I glue the rest. Pretty much had to unless I wanted to sit there the whole time until the glue dried.

Head down to almost any auto upholstery shop with an empty gallon paint can. They'll usually sell it to you. You can get the cans pretty much anywhere. Napa, Baxter's, etc.

Well I had a guy from my grandad's church who used to own an auto upholstery shop (retired now) recommend that weldwood stuff so I went ahead and got that on amazon. I asked him if it was any good and he said it was some of the best out there. Its contact cement so its probably what I needed in the first place. Screw that 3M spray can stuff.

Weldwood is basically DAP. As long as it's the high heat resistant top and trim contact cement, it'll work great. I'm not sure why you had such a hard time finding it in a gallon. I searched on my phone for about 5 minutes and found like 4-5 places selling it. Usually about $32 a gallon.

Thanks for looking for me but really I wanted half a gallon. $32 is a little more then I want to spend on a project that has already gone wrong, and I have to be very budget minded these days.

Skunksmash,
I recently did mine with indoor/outdoor carpet glue that I trowled on with a notched trowel. It is sticking really well. I think it cost me $5 and some change for a quart which was plenty.

something close to that...  I cant recall the brand name. Bought it at Menards. I think it was around $6 a quart. One thing I wish I had done....run some kind of flat conduit under your carpet before you glue it down. Invariably you'll find something you want to wire like a light or a speaker from the back of the cab to the front. I wish I would have done that now!

The DAP wellwood contact cement will hold it on there.  It may be impossible to get it off in one piece though.
