82 GMC SWB Frame Off
« on: July 07, 2012, 10:32:44 am »
Hello everyone, I'm a newbie here so bear with me please.

I started this project back in January, 2011. Wanting to build a hot rod, and knowing what vehicle I wanted to build, I finally purchased an '87 SWB Chevrolet. After digging into the '87 I soon realized that it was a lot rougher than what I wanted for a foundation to build upon. The only thing I ended up using from the '87 was the frame and a few small parts here and there.

While working on the '87 chassis, I finally found a very clean one owner '82 SWB GMC. I purchased it in August, 2011. It had minimal rust with only a few dings on it.

The goal of the build was to end up with a very streetable, tire shredding, yet subtle monster. I wanted lots of horsepower and lots of tire and wanted to maintain somewhat of a factory appearance.

Being that I am now almost finished with the truck you will see it come together much faster than I did! I will post pictures very soon. Thanks again for the great site!

Looking forward to seeing them.

X2.  Hopefully it will inspire me to continue the work on my 2 trucks.

My pictures of the early stages of the build are at work. I will bring those home tomorrow and post some of them. Until then here's a little something to get a taste of things to come.

I thought I had more pictures of the '87 but these are all that I've found.

I'll be honest here, I went and looked at this truck in the dark, while it was raining and after a few beers. It had a big block in it and a turbo 400 trans and it was a SWB. Exactly what I was looking for. Sold! Thinking back now, I probably didn't look much past the big block.

After I brought it home I got to poking/digging around on it with with a pick and found what appeared to be multiple bullet holes and lots of rust. It ended up getting scrapped.

I used the frame from the '87 but here are pictures of the '82 chassis. This is exactly what I started with.

I have no pictures of the chassis being torn down or being rebuilt. I only have pictures of after it was complete and rolling.
