Cheapo mech fuel pump failed.

So I ordered another mech acdelco from summit. I want to know what are my options for my daily. It will see high rpms couple times a day and will be hooked up to my 1406 carb. Just need something dependable. I've been thinking about the red holley electric pump, but I hear electric pumps over heat. Any advise and thoughts appreciated. Thanks

For 20 bucks I just replaced my fuel pump with whatever was at the local car parts store. Took 15 minutes worth of work. It's so easy to do, it's like who cares, just buy another if it fails. I understand you want something quality though.

I hear Carter is pretty good though. I did some research before I just ended up settling on what was available at the local car parts store.

For whatever it's worth to you... The cheap-o thing I put on my truck is great. From the failing pump to now, it's like night and day. I can mash the gas and it just goes. Starts right up first try, don't have to pump the gas pedal anymore, etc.

I mean, it's just a mechanical fuel pump. It's not the most complicated thing in the world, mechanically speaking. Aside from different materials and tolerances, they're all the same. And we are talking about an old carburated motor. It's just a big controlled fuel leak as it is lol.

The part-store replacements that I've found ended up being Carters anyway. They seem to do the job fine. If you go to Holley's or anything 'performance' based, you will very likely need a pressure regulator since they seem to run at a higher pressure than Edelbrocks typically like.

Ok the one that failed was the cheapo 20 buck deal... it sprayed gas at my motor mount:-( for 20miles. I was looking to find a better mor dependable pump to have as a backup if this one fails. Yes its easy, but if you have to drive home with your pump spraying gas... its not good

I had never had any problems with the cheap pumps until I bought one for my diesel (mechanical pump to injector pump) and couldn't figure out why my brand new motor wouldn't push fuel. Well I noticed I lost pressure at the bleeder valve in the fuel filter head. So I unhooked a couple lines....no fuel even after cranking for a while. I assume I just got a bad one. All the ones I've use on my 350's have worked fine tho. Personally I would go for a manual pump because I don't like the electrics but I have a couple inline pumps from Carquest that I like. They look like a metal fuel filter with two wires and do not require a regulator. They were reasonably priced too. If you buy a mechanical, order a good one....Carter, AC Delco, I'd say NAPA and Carquest carry reliable ones on shelf.

It was spraying gas? What was wrong with it?

The pump srayed gas from the weep hole on the side. Mind you I don't have very many miles on the pump. (15k)

I've used Carter pumps for a long time without any issues.  When the '73 and '74 were my daily drivers, I'd change the pump out after 2 to 3 years to be on the safe side. It sounds like you probably just got a pump with a bad diaphragm...

i've had pretty good luck with Airtex which you can get at advanced auto and probably other autoparts type stores.

When you say bought another AC delco, you mean the one that failed was also a delco?

The one I bought was an airtex. I bought an acdelco hoping it will serve me better. We will see... I've been pretty easy on the engine so far.

just had one fail on my 86 c10 after i did a motor swap and just bought the cheepest one advanced auto had and packed it  full of grease and have put about 8k on it in the last 4 months with no problems.

Uh oh----Now you have me worried.    Did the pump look new when you took it out of the box?

Yes... And it still looked new when it failed. I'm just going to buy another acdelco to gabber as a back up

If your looking into Electric fuel pumps....I bought a Jegs 105 gallon an hour with a reg.(think it was $90-$100) and i haven had problems yet.But i didn't drive around 10 hours non stop ether...And also put a relay kit in it to
