Need Help Adjusting Door Hinges
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:54:29 pm »
Hey everybody! I just replaced the driver door pins and bushings on my 79 K10 because of some unwanted play. Now the door is sagging badly; worse at the end opposite the hinges. The adjustment on the door is right on in and out and the front body line matches perfectly up front, yet I have a gap at the top that increases from front to back and the rear line of the door doesn't match the cab. It sits about a 1/4" low. Its also is rubbing across the striker pretty heavily. Of course now its not making a proper seal at all. I am thinking the hinges need adjusting and I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to doing this without removing the front fender. Thanks in advance for your help!

So is the door lower now than it was before you replaced the pins & bushings? Is there still up & down play in the hinges if you lift up on the lower back corner of the door? How did the bushings fit in the hinge...did you have to tap them in place?
As far as "tricks", not the correct way, but a way if you have clearance at the lower rear corner of the door to cab corner is to install a shim...1/8" should do, between the hinge & the door on the bottom 2 bolts on the lower hinge...this will raise the door in the way that you need it without fighting the bolts on the cowl.
There are "S" shaped wrenches for the hinge to cowl bolts. They can be with a bit of effort with an off-set box wrench or a homemade shortened 9/16" socket welded on a flat bar. Hope this helps ya', Lorne

if you cant adjust it any further with the hinges either because it will mess up the front part of the door, or because there is no more play in the hinge then what i always do is put a piece of wood at the bottom of the door a 2 by 4 will work, but not on the edge but in the inside part of the door where it will sit nicely then with a jack lift the door up from the corner. keep lifting until you pass the "just perfect mark" by about 3/8 to 1/2 in since the door will move slightly down after you remove the jack... the first time i did it i thought i just wasn´t going to work or something was going to brake, but no it works great seriously... see if it can work for you

Haulin, I did have to tap the new bushings in. Getting the old bushings and pins out; however, needed a little more than a tap. I will try to find the "S" shaped wrenches, I think I've seen what your talking about somewhere before. If I can find the wrenches I will try to adjust the door at the hinges first. Thank you both for your input!
