remove hood to replace fender?
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:17:42 pm »
Hey guys, so im replacing the drivers side fender and door shell on my truck on thursday/friday.  When i was looking at it, it looks like I might need to remove my hood before I remove the front fender? Is that right? or am i just making extra work for myself?
One other thing, and this might need to be under "electrical" but, The door i bought is PW/PDL like mine, but the wires are cut because the guy couldnt find a place to "unhook" the wires.  Will it be pretty simple to cut my wires and match colors to colors to get them hooked up to my PW/PDL?
Thanks for all your help and patience

No need to take your hood off. Just mark where the bolts are first, prop the hood up and unbolt your hinge and spring on that side.

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

if you take the hood off it automatically becomes a two man job.... i also don't recommended taking the hood off... you can just unbolt the hinge and spring and make a way so the hood just doesn´t fall like a 2 by 4 bracing the hood some how... just an idea...

X2, I just did that with my 85.  Propped the hood up with a 2x4

Ditto, I wouldn't remove the hood.  I also would not cut the wiring, the whole PW/PDL wiring is separate.  You just need to remove the rivets from the old door to get all of it out...

I have a 1" dowel that I put down to the bottom of the radiator support by where the inner fender bolts to it. I don't like putting it on top of the support because it could slip out.

If you remove the plugs from the switches, lock, and motor inside the door you can slide the whole harness out of the door, and then put it back into the new door. You will need to remove the two rivits that hold the wire harness boot to the door.

Keep track of the shims how many, and where you take them out from. Should only be in three possible places. The fender bolt under the hood, the one in the door jamb above the hinge, and the bottom rear bolt though the front of the rocker panel.
When you put the new fender back on a good starting spot would be to put the spacers back. You might need to add or subtract a little hera or there.
