83 GMC K 1500 fuel system upgrade
« on: December 29, 2012, 11:40:08 pm »
What is the easiest way to upgrade the dual tank fuel system.  I want to get rid of the right tank and just use the left one.  I would like to get rid of any unnecessary wiring and hoses if possible.  Is there an in tank sending unit that will work?  How about any aftermarket tanks?  What kind of set up would work?  The body is off of the frame so fabrication or location is not an issue.  Thanks.  Oh yes its a short bed.

If you want to eliminate one of the tanks is should be a simple matter of removing the crossover lines, the switch valve and running the fuel lines directly to the tank.  It will be MUCH easier using the Left (passenger) tank though as the lines are already ran down that side of the frame and from the factory the single tank was on the Left.  As far as the wiring to the switching valve, you should be able to trace it back to the switch and then over to the firewall to the instrument cluster.  Outside the firewall before the fuse box should be a plug, just use the wires you removed for the sending unit to go to just one tank.

What are you hoping to accomplish?  Simplifying the fuel system or?

Just simplifying the fuel system and getting rid of any unnecessary wiring and fuel lines.  Thanks for the response and uez it would be easier to keep the left tank.
