Everyone on here has been saying for a long time that a q-jet carb will out perform others.  The problem is in the tuning of the q-jet, it is more involved than the others.
The torque convertor question, what do you plan on doing with the truck.  Are you going to be smoking the rear wheels off, or drag racing, or just want hot rodding ?

#2: There is no such thing as impossible, it just takes longer.

I like the quadrajets better than any other carb myself. Unfortunately with a semi aggressive cam mine did not want to work so well. I bought a 1406 and it is working great. I may send the original quadrajet off to jet performance and have it rebuilt but without knowing the specs on the cam it will be hard to do.

When you're ready to have your qjet rebuilt abs mods don't to it give Ken at  http://www.everyday-performance.com/ a call. Think rebuilt modded and painted cost 250, just a rebuilt abs mods like 175 if I remember correctly. He can build it to match a cam just by description
