Charcoal Vapor canister thing
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:52:20 am »
Doing away with all this underhood crap thats old and no longer needed. Between my Holley, Intake, and my comp vac can I have all my vacuum lines covered. The only thing connected to the charcoal canister was a vapor line that runs to gas tank(s). What type of fitting can I place over the fuel line to prevent vapor lock? thanks in advance all you smart innovative guys out there.

Why not leave it?  If you don't have the purge valves hooked up the charcoal will get saturated and it won't work as well as intended, but without it you will smell gas from time to time.  If you insist on removing it you could use a vented gas cap or put a small breather filter on the vapor line.

The only thing connected to the charcoal canister was the gas line. None of the vacuum lines were used. I didn't see the point if retaining the 30 year old pos when it was only performing half of its intended function. I will look into the filter option

Even with only the vapor line hooked up it at least acts as a charcoal filter and will eliminate some of the fumes.  A regular filter will not.

I got rid of mine as well to clean up under the hood. All I did was use a axle vent breather and made the hose longer and attached it to the rad support. The odd time I get a hint of gas fumes but only when its right full.

Thanks, most people seem to go with a axle type vent. JAREDTS I just couldnt keep looking at it man, maybe its OCD or something. I even tried cleaning it and capping all the unused lines. Its still an eye sore to me, and i figured that it was a more practical option. Even if i could purchase a smaller canister with charcoal only. Summit sells universal ones.

I know how you feel--hooked up correctly is a bowl of spaghetti and capped off looks rigged.  It just turns out that some sort of charcoal filter is the perfect solution.  Maybe make your own and buy some charcoal from a pet supply place or reuse what is in yours.

My 1978 has no vents.  Fuel lines and returns, no vent lines.  Vented fuel caps.

Dunno if that's what it came with or not, but it's a clean look.

I eliminated mine a couple of months back and just capped the line coming from the fuel tanks, but I have noticed whenever I go to fill up my tank and unscrew my gas cap there is back pressure.  Will this harm anything if I continue to run it like this without a vented cap?

As you draw gas out of the tank, or when temps are falling, you are going to create vacuum in the tank that will fight the fuel pump's ability to deliver.  Just drill a sixteenth-inch hole through the caps.
