remove foam from headliner to reuse cloth?
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:12:41 pm »
My headliner in my suburban is completely sagging and the foam turns to dust soon as anything bumps it.  If I remove all of the foam from the headliner cardboard and from the cloth itself, can I just use some 3M 77 spray adhesive to reattach it?  I plan to eventually replace the headliner the correct way, but I have a few mechanical things that need money spent on them first.  Should this at least hold the cloth for the headliner up out of the way until I can do it the right way?

Hancock fabrics had a sale today for 50% off one fabric purchase, so I got all new material for $40 :D
EDIT: also, if anyone needed to know, it's about 55" by 55" for the back section of the headliner, so 60" by 120" (5 sq yd or so) will cover the entire headliner.  Since I brought up an uncut roll of fabric that had some dirt from hands on it they gave me a good yard or so for free to get to the clean material.

I have replaced several head liners in the past and the best thing is to have someone help you remove the old liner, scrap the old crap off. Clean the shell up as good as you can get it. Go find a fabric shop and buy  what you need, spray it down with 3M adhesive, and have your buddy help roll it out keeping the wrinkles out. Let it dry for a couple days, cut out your necessary holes, and BAM you'll be happy on how much money you will save. ;)

I still have yet to put my headliner back together due to lack of time and funds for everything that goes behind and on the headliner (I figure a matching color dome light from a 90s astro van would be a good replacement for the silver round one ) but I'm still concerned whether or not I should use the 3M headliner spray or just the normal 3M 77 I have.  I do live in Texas, so I can imagine that roof would be getting quite hot in the summer time and would hate to have to repair it again.
