control arms
« on: July 24, 2006, 12:31:00 am »
I have a 85 c-10 chevy pickup(2wheel drive) with a 350 small block.I'm wanting to redo my whole front stock suspension.because this is a daily driver-i need to do it in a weekend. does anyone know where i can get reconditioned upper and lower control arm assemblies for a descent price. i want to get as much of the new suspension built before i start tearing my old suspension off.any help or suggestions would be great.thanks.

What's wrong with your control arms now.Are they just rusty?
If you start on a Friday night, you should be able to rip everything apart, and have it done in a weekend including painting the parts.Best thing would be to wait for a long weekend.

Make sure you have an air chisel on hand if you want to change the control arm bushings.

Watch out for used lower control arms. The ball joint hole may be oversized and the ball joint won't press in tightly. I had to make sleeves for the holes, but I wouldn't try this at home.

My whole front suspension (especially the bushings) has seen better days and I'm restoring this truck 1 weekend at a time.My old control arms aren't in real bad shape but I'm wanting to get all new or refurbished suspension parts together and put together(as much as i can) before tearing into this.I'll be doing this in a small shop and paying by the hour for the space. Thanks for the advice on having an air chisel and etc.any other advice or info is greatly appreciated.

Truck has aftermarket control arms. The drawing in their catalogue appears to have the control arm shafts and bushings included. You would have to check to be sure.

You will also need a spring compressor, pitman arm remover tool, and a fork to separate the ball joints from the spindles.

Also, you need I believe a 1-1/4" socket wrench for the pitman arm nut.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that Performance Online (performanceonline.com) has upper and lower control arms for chevy 73-87 pickup trucks even though it's not listed on their site. They come with ball joints, x-shafts and bushings and the prices aren't too bad.Hope this helps if anyone is looking for control arms.
