Transfer case seal question
« on: February 22, 2014, 10:10:18 am »
I have a 205 transfer case mounted to a three speed tremec tranny. The adapter that mates the two together and hold the sleeve that connect them Has one seal in the end facing the transfer case. Have any of you used two seals installed back to back where this seal is. It looks like two will fit into the case. This would look to help any grease from going either way. I have always thought that any seal with a spring around the lip, that the spring goes to the side where the fluid or grease is located. Any thoughts appreciated......

I do not know about the 2 seals fitting in there, but tremac should be able to answer that question.  The groove or flanged part of any seal is suppose to face the way that it is keeping fluid in, so you are right.
I wonder if they make a double seal for that.

I'm not sure if your talking putting one each way, both in the back bore or one in the front bore & one in the back? Where are you wanting to keep the oil that you are thinking about doing this?
There are Two styles of "adapters", either with the bearing or without...the front seals job is keeping the trans fluid in the trans. on the automatics. The ones with just the sleeve have a seal in both the front & rear from what I've seen. On the manuals, I've seen those all having the bearing...which needs oil & they get it from the trans. so the front seal is not used. Not saying this is FACT, only what I have found from the several I've collected, taken apart, ect. That is one thing tough with working on a vehicle of this age...it's sometimes hard to tell who did what & why at a previous time. Lorne

It only has a place on the adapter for a seal on the side that bolts to the transfer case. It had one seal and it was turned toward the transmission, and the seal looks like a double sided seal, one that would prevent grease from moving on both sides. I have read some time ago where guys we're putting two of these seals back to back for extra insurance against any leaks from the transfer case into the adapter. Since there needs to be some oil in the adapter to lube the splines on the coupler, I would guess it comes from the transmission end of the adapter. just wondering if anyone has heard of or tried this seal method......
