Bad Radio Reception
« on: April 15, 2014, 11:11:47 pm »
so when I turn on my radio I can pick up some stations but they are very weak and they do not come in well if at all. and I also cant pick anything up when I use the seek function so I have to go to each station manually to try and pick it up. I do have an aftermarket radio and when I got the truck the antenna wasn't even plugged in, so I went and bought what I thought was the appropriate adapter for it and it does kind of work like I said. I noticed today that the connection on the adapter to the stock antenna plug seems loose. so could this be my problem or is it something else in the antenna. and by the way it is the style where the antenna is built into the windshield. this is on a 1983 chevy k10. thanks

The windshield antenna was never very reliable, did you check to make sure the wire you put on was still hooked up to the windshield leads ?  If it was me a would go buy a exterior antenna and put it on my truck.

Usually the antenna plug on aftermarket radios is correct female connecter for American vehicles. I have a Pioneer in my truck right now, had a Dual and some other one once before that, Sony or Alpine I think it was. Never have I needed an adapter to connect the stock antenna cable into the radio. Even when my cable got broken and I pulled the one out of my 73 it still worked perfectly. Have never had reception issues with the windshield antenna.

It sounds like you have some kind of cable problem or the radio could be bad. I accidentally  pulled the terminal of my original cable and when I pushed it back on it made the reception go to crap. Yanked the cable from my 73 and works fine ever since. Try getting another cable, maybe a wrecking yard or some place and test to see if it improves. Also make sure the connector at the windshield base is still intact and not broken or pulled away. Possibly try another radio if available to see if signal quality changes. My old dual deck got canned because the screen stopped working and then so did the memory buttons. The signal was bad if I used the buttons but if I tuned to the station it came in clear. Not sure why lol.

some rust off, some just become loose. but this would be the second place i would look after the stereo connection

so today I was rewiring the radio that's in the truck because the last guy that put it in didn't do it right and was on constant power all the time and running the battery dead after a day or two. so while I was in there I checked my connections and they were all good except the adapter connection so I pushed it tighter and wrapped it with electrical tape so it stays on good. after I was done I  was going through all the stations and they all picked up good and came in clear including the seek function. so I don't know why the adapter made a difference when I thought it was tight before or if anything else changed, but thanks for the input anyway.
