Electric Fuel pump / Fuel return line

305 w/Edelbrock 1405 Carb. Spun the motor and no pressure or suction on the inlet or outlet of the mechanical fuel pump. It is a cheap "pressed together" one, so opening it and rebuilding it is out of the question.

So I am opting for a electric pump, but I am unsure of what to do with the return line.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've been running Holley's "red" pump (12-801-1) for years with no complaints, other than it is a bit noisy.  Holley says it doesn't require a fuel pressure regulator.  I just plugged my return line in the engine compartment.  The tank side don't care.  If you wanted to for peace of mind, you could install a pressure regulator (12-803BP).  With the regulator you'll have a port for the return line.  ...or do an Edelbrock pump regulator combo (12-803BP),or pump only (1791).

You didn't say what year of truck you are working on...  but replacement mechanical fuel pumps are rather cheap and inexpensive and you can get one so you can hook it back up the same way..

85 de-smogged, 1406 edelbrock, Performer RPM, open headers because I hate my neighbors.

Only issues I am having is the fuel pump and the fact that the headers leave almost not access to the spark plugs. I am going to have to get shorty plugs and a set of ceramic boot plug wires. I am not to concerned about the plug wires atm as I just want to get the engine in time and the carb adjusted right. It will crank if I bottle feed the carb and sounds pretty good.


This truck was my dads that was sitting under the carport for about 7 years on flats and a wrecked tranny. 

I think I went overboard with the paint while waiting on the tranny to be reuiblt.

     That 1406 carb. has a max pressure you can run with it.  If you were to put an electric fuel pump on you will need a regulator also so you don't flood your carb.

I decided to go back with a mechanical. After comparing the old to the new one it was more than obvious the old one was trash.
Happy to know it still runs after sitting up for a long time, I did reseal the engine and rebuild the carb.

I never thought about if that paint is uv reactive. I'm going to have to try it out and post some after I get all the brackets and pullies painted.

      That would remind me of some rave somewhere all shut up indoors with all the weird lights.
