86 Chevy wiper problems
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:21:54 am »
Hello all I"m new to this forum and I'm in need or help from someone who has experience with demons in the wipers.  Here's the problem: when I turn on the wipers all the gauges in the dash quit working and the turn signal indicators light up.  The gauges and indicator lights will stay this way until I either shut the truck off, or crank the wipers off hard.  The wipers don't turn on through this whole ordeal.  So my question is this, where is the problem?  (I'm assuming there's a short to ground)  Is it in the multifunction switch?  The handle that attaches to the switch?  Or the wiper pulse module?  Any help would be great.  Thanks everyone.

Disassemble and clean your dash ground at the left kick panel, next to the park brake pedal assembly; disassemble and clean the cab-to-right rear cylinder head ground; disassemble and clean the battery-to-engine ground; disassemble and clean the battery-to-radiator support ground; disassemble and clean the battery-to-frame ground.  In other words, service all the ground connections, but pay particular attention to the cab and dash grounds!

And, Welcome to the Forum!

Thank you for the response.  I'll work down the list as soon as I can.

Hello
I doubt if you have a short to ground but, more than likely you have a missing or corroded grounds.
If you did any work to the dash area, recheck all your connections. If not check all the grounds going from the engine and frame to the body.
If I remember correctly, the grounding for the dash gauges comes from the harness which comes from the body grounds.
