Nature! Get it off!!!
« on: July 14, 2014, 04:43:59 pm »
Since I moved back to AL, my ol' truck has been home to a couple nests at any given time (except winter, of course), and I'd fog the crap out of it a day or two before driving it anywhere.
Though I've been in and out of the truck numerous times between treatments (they always move back in), never got stung. On the river trail this past Saturday, my better half and I were watching our little girl play near the river in Tuscaloosa when suddenly we were set upon by an angry swarm. My wife got out of the way in time, but I got nailed about 5 times... once in the right index fingertip joint and the rest on the back of my neck.

So... I've decided to find some more permanent method of ridding my truck of these guys. Today I tucked Bounce dryer sheets in the door cracks, wheelwells, and under the hood, as I've heard they hate the smell. I also have a bottle of Mint extract for future experimentation.

The only other natural issue I'm having is pollen, but that's relatively easy to deal with.

How do they keep getting in and where are they setting up shop ?

Humm....  I get nests in the donor truck but not in the one I'm around often.  I live about 2 hours southeast of you and know about those summer friends we get in Alabama.  I don't have any natural remedies other than get a some chickens - you'll get eggs too.

Ah, I'd love a flock of Rhode Island Reds and their eggs. But... wifey is a city gal and not really inclined to let me keep 'em on the property.

I just tossed a couple dryer sheets in the cab, laid a few out in the wheelwells and in the engine compartment. I've seen references to that being a repellent. They're crawling in through the forward door crack and setting up inside the doorway. I don't know whether any are *inside* the panels, but there sure are a lot of 'em when I open the door.

door jams like said, i keep my trucks with the windows cracked just to let her breath on the hot days and i have vent guards so rain isnt a problem but wasp are. i had yellow jackets and just the common black wasp under my dash. i took the gauges off once and behind them was a little nest. didnt have wasp killer so i sprayed them black they were yellow. but i reached under my dash once and i got poked by a wire, so i stuck my head under the dash to hear a buzzing sound this guy was a little slow so i ran away. he flew off and i went on looking for more of them.

While doing final assembly on my truck (which was all done in a yard, no garage not even a slab just grass and mud) some bird kept using my intake manifold as a place to build a nest. That nest and it's eggs got launched into the yard. But the bird came back and kept trying to rebuild. I still have some twigs on it. Also like most of you I had wasps setting up under my dash and inside my doors.

I just doused the inside of the doorways last night. As the tranny in my HHR is giving out, I gotta sell my truck to pay for the repairs... wouldn't do to have a prospective buyer attacked.
