whats the story behind these things? Extra special factory order or a Frankenstein experiment that just happened to work out?

The story goes, Ford and Dodge had them in the 70's.  CVI out of Arlington, TX was a Van Conversion company that also did GM trucks.  GM authorized them and gave a full factory warranty.  Wheel base was not touched, 18 inches was removed from the front of the bed, bed floor was used in the extended cab floor and pieced from there.
