1976 c10 ignition switch or key cylinder broken?
« on: January 13, 2015, 03:21:29 pm »
hoping someone can help. the other day i went to start my 76 c10 to leave work, but the motor would not crank, although the dash did respond to the key being turned. thinking it was a low battery, i had a coworker hook his jumper cables to it, and tried again. this time not only did it not crank, but it felt like something broke loose and the key jumped past the start position (obviously should not be able to do that) and still did nothing. i then had alot of trouble getting it to turn back to off so i could remove my key, but i did get it to. now i can turn the ignition without the key, but with the key in i cannot turn it. every once in a while if i turn it as far as it wants to go the dash will respond, but not every time. also, i cannot move the automatic shift lever with the ignition turned as i should be able to. this is way beyond my scope of knowledge, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

There are how too's covering your issue but it would be so much easier to just find a donor column and replace the whole thing.
