New Underhood Lamp
« on: June 15, 2015, 10:05:37 pm »
So I recently sold my 91 camaro. Before I put it up for sale, I took the underhood lamp off. It was a complete, factory unit, in good condition with all pieces. All I did to remove it was remove the clips, unscrew the lamp housing and unplug the wire from the rest of the engine harness.

Then on Saturday, I found a nice fitting, open spot on the hood, mounted the lamp housing, used the wire clips to hold the wire to the hood, cut the orginal plug off a few inches back down the wire and put a small ring terminal on it and ran it to the junction block. I saved the original connector from the camaro just in case, as we all know how hard it is to find small things like that on older cars.

Anyway, the hole deal worked out great, light works, turns off and on when opened and closed and I found an LED bulb at the local O'Reilly's today.  Took a few pics. When it's dark tonight, I'll take a pic to see how well the LED lights up the engine area.

The wire clips went in the holes that the washer squirters originally used, but I mounted squirters on the wiper arms so the holes were perfect for the clips.

Here's the LED bulb I got.

Each bulb has 15 LED's.

This is during the evening, sun is still out and it's still daylight.

Ok, here's the night time pics I promised, taken about 10:45 tonight.

The first, standing right against the grille, as if to work on something.

Little wider shot of the whole bay.

Against the right fender.

Against the left fender.

The last 1, standing about 20 feet back from the front of the truck. You can see the light it throws on the ground and around the area.

how does it turn on? is there like a gravity switch or something that senses when the light is sitting upright?

Yea that's exactly how it works. The mercury switch opens when the hood is closed, light off and closes when the hood is open, light on. They do work pretty good, GM been using them for a long time. This one works great. The cool thing about that is, if it's not turning off or on at the right time, you just give the bracket a little tweek, it changes the position of the switch inside and then it will work better, so just tweek it up or down till its good.

After looking at this one last night, I may have to go to the wrecking yard and find another and put 1 in the same place on the other side, I have an extra bulb, LED is a 2-pack.
