4.3 85-94?
« on: July 28, 2015, 08:51:09 pm »
My 85 step side is one of the few that came with a 4.3 and a turbo 400. The engine is crap and I have access to a almost free 94 4.3 from an S-10.
Knowing it is an injected engine will the intake, carb, distributor from the 85 switch to the 94 engine. I know NOTHING about the V6 line. If it was small or big block I would not even be here .

Been working on cars and trucks all my life. 63 now and not a new hand at this but smart enough to know when to ask the simple questions. Rather V8 the truck but almost free is always a good thing.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

1) First off, who wants to bet that he will get his truck running before i do?   Funny and sad at the same time.......... :-[

2) Does this 94 have a balance shaft?

Distributor should work.  Not sure about the intake.   You probably know you'll need an electric pump.  There is a way to drill a hole for the fuel pump pushrod, but it's just cheaper/easier to use an electric pump.

Do the intake bolts on the 94 point straight up or are they angled and how many bolts are there?

Going to check the S10 this weekend. Will know more after that. What has been presented here is good information for me to look for when I do get under the hood of this S10.
Thank you for all the info.

Hehe......this engine gets no love from the fullsize pickup community.

i don't time to research right now, but there is a way to run a conventional manifold and carb on a 94, the 85's manifold may even work.  But there is a way.

Replacing the 4.3 with a 4.3 was NEVER in the playbook. I can get it for a total investment of $150. ONLY reason I was asking if it would work.

You see every time I do a Craigslist search the numbers: 4-5-4 keep getting typed into the search window!

I have always been a small block guy BUT my favorite car I ever owned (in 1971-72)  was an 1971 LS5 SS454. I just want that sound back in my driveway while I am still young enough to enjoy it.  ;D

a 192 jump in CU inches with do alot even in stock form.  Do your homework and gather all the needed parts, engine frame mounts and brackets.  There is alot that is different.

Found a two owner 77-8-9 (not sure which yet) suburban that is factory 454/400 trans with a/c and power steering. Very rotted body and very original truck. Almost everything needed all in one place. The compressor is different in that it has the old long style but that is not a problem.
Just waiting to see it in person IF he decides he wants to sell it. My stepside sat for 4 years before the original owner(at age 85) let it go. I got a pile of original documents with it as well!
Patience can sometimes be a four letter word but it does pay rewards! 8)
