Vacuum line questions
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:17:22 pm »
Hello all. This is my first post. Just bought a 1983 c20. Has a 305, 700r4 and a 9.5 inch 14 bolt rear. Ive had 2 third gen camaros so the engine bay isn't completely foreign to me. However there are some vacuum ports that aren't hooked up. I want to make sure I don't have a bunch of vacuum leaks. Engine idles a bit high so I suspect I do. I took some pictures and put some arrows. Can someone help me identify these items and if them not being hooked up is detrimental to general performance? One is on the egr valve but I cannot recall where the missing line should go. Part 2 of my question is, assuming it's the original carb, will deleting the smog pump throw anything off? I took them off of the tbi and tpi engines in the camaros but they were computer controlled so they could adjust a little bit. Any info would be very appreciated!

Not exactly sure on #1.  Could have something to do with the distributor.  i did have that on 2 of my engines including the 4.3 i'm using now so i may be  able to report back soon.

#2 and #3 goes to the torque converter lockup on the trans.  Not exactly sure where to connect it to though as i don't have mine hooked up either.  Again, i may be able to report back later.

Sorry I meant to post this picture instead of one of the duplicate images.

1st picture is a vacuum operated switch that is activated by temperature.   You can eliminate both of those and plug them with a pipe plug.

83 may be different, but on an 85 the TCC lock up is on the opposite side near the drivers. I dont think the 2nd picture is your TCC lock up.

Check your carburetor and look for the ports coming off of it. Follow the vacuum lines and make sure they are plugged in. You can also remove all the vacuum lines from the carburetor, plug the ports and see if it idles down. Then one by one add the vacuum lines and you can find your problem if the idle changes.

3rd picture is your EGR. It can be eliminated with a block off plate.

What transmission do you have?   TH350?

700r4 is the trans. Perhaps the temp switch went to the egr? No matter. No emissions to worry about where I am so I'd like to get rid of the smog and egr if it won't mess with the carb tune too much.
