Brake Light Problem
« on: February 17, 2016, 05:35:48 pm »
I'm new to this board, so hello to everyone. I have a weird brake light issue. Two months back as part of some other (unrelated) work, I had the steering column on my 1987 Chevrolet V10 SWB replaced with a rebuilt unit. Last weekend during an oil change, I was told the backup and brake lights were inoperative during the standard light check. The backup light fix was easy. The shop never adjusted the reverse switch.

With regard to the brake lights, I have 12V at the brake switch orange wire, and at the white wire when the switch is active (pedal depressed). I chased the white wire to the turn signal switch, and it's 12V there with the pedal depressed. On the column side of the connector I verified continuity between the white, green, and yellow wires with the turn signal lever in the "neutral" position. I didn't check the continuity with the turn signal switch in the left/right position because I know the turn signals and flashers work. Depending on the turn signal switch setting, I would expect to lose continuity at either the green or yellow wire. The only other piece of information I can add is there doesn't seem to be 12V power at the Brake/Haz fuse. I suppose it's possible someone tapped into another 12V source for the orange wire at the brake switch, but I haven't determined this.

If any of this sounds familiar to someone, please weigh in. And, thanks!

Make sure there are good connections through the turn signal switch connector that plugs into the harness alongside the steering column under the dash.  It is not uncommon for a wire to become dislodged from its connector or for the connectors not to be fully plugged together and seated after service.

I would be concerned with the column connectors except both rear turn signals light, as do the rear hazards. These use the same filaments as the rear brake lights. Tail lights and backup lights work also. I'm getting suspicious of the turn signal switch, except for the success of my continuity tests.

To close this out, the problem was traced to the turn signal switch.
