Shift Detent Plate

I recently put a 700R4 into a 350 turbo truck, the column is 3 speed, how do I modify the column to move to the correct positions when shifting, I've seen detent plates and I've seen where the positions were molded right into the inside of the column itself, not sure what I have or how to fix it, any help is much appreciated. 1982-1984 C10
