New distributor without ESC
« on: April 09, 2016, 10:08:01 pm »
Hi I have a 1985 GMC Sierra with a 305 5.0L and a TH700R4 tranny. I have new long tube headers edelbrock intake and 1406 600cfm electric choke carb. I would like to remove all the emissions as I don't have inspections and won't be driving it on the street very much. If I remove the ecm/ESC/ computer that controls the distributor and any other computers that run engine stuff all vacuum lines and cruise control after all this mess is cleaned up I basically just want an engine that is reliable and good on the street I just want a carb and distributor controlled by mechanical only other than the vacuum on the distributor. I have stripped everything out of the engine compartment so far and soon will be putting it back together

1. What would be the best non computer controlled distributor to pair with this carb?
2. I have heard people say that the lockup in the tranny will not work and could damage it after removing all the computers and controls. Is this statement true and if so are their kits or someone to hook it up with the absence of the controls?
3. Anything else I should be careful of or should know before continuing this?

Thank you so much to anyone that can help me!

1) Any HEI distributor for v-8 small block would work great.   You could even keep your existing distributor and modify it to work without computer control.  i don't have time right now to get into it but here's a link for a start:

2) Can't help with #2 as i don't know anything about 700's.

3) i recommend running the full PCV system and not running just breathers on the valve covers.   Well, you could have one breather on the air intake side, but on the suction side i would personally run the valve and run a line back to the intake/or carb.   This is because i think it works better this way to clear the crankcase of blow-by gasses.

Yes I am planning on running the pic system with pcv valve side hooked to carb and just a k&n breather on the other side. Thanks for your help!

Put your PCV and Charcoal can purge back in.  Not much to either system.
PCV will keep a slight vacuum in the crankcase to keep your engine from eating and leaking oil.  You use a breather in the RH valve cover or hook the PCV filter back up on the air cleaner.  Put new grommets in the valve covers to keep dirt out of the engine.
The charcoal can needs a ported vacuum to the purge control and a Tee into the PCV vacuum line to the intake for the actual purge.  Your garage won't smell of raw fuel if you keep it hooked up.
Use SAE J30R7 Emissions hose for the PCV and Charcoal can purge lines.

Hook your vacuum advance to ported or manifold vacuum depending on what theory you adhere...  I use ported vacuum.

Obviously the brake booster goes to manifold vacuum.

ESC, if you have it, can be disabled by modifying electrical connections to bypass it.

TH700R4 lockup...   The best way to do it is to leave the ECM in place along with the brake pedal switch wires, vacuum override switch, VSS on the speedometer, and the control wiring.
You can install a manual or semi manual control.
