AC controls don't illuminate

Hi all,
As always thank you for the wealth of info!!
1987 V10 1/2 ton 4wd pickup...
Been restoring her for a cpl years, and not to far away from getting her street legal!!
I noticed the other night, and I never noticed before, but the HVAC does not illuminate when I turn on my headlights... is this a bulb issue, or a unit issue before I go tearing the dash down?

A #161 bulb & 2-wire pigtail socket fits into the right side, rear of the panel.

It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it.
In other words... if people learn by making mistakes, by now I should know just about everything!!!
