Rumability
« on: February 15, 2017, 09:34:29 pm »
Need some help. I have an 83 k10 with a 350. It started popping and sputtering when you give it gas. I had a friend look at it and he said gas was only coming out of one side of the carb. My father in law had a rebuilt carb that he put on to see if that was the problem. It still does the same thing with a different carb. At idle it runs fine. Anyone have any thoughts?

If it's popping thru the carb, check the bushings in the distributor, a lobe is worn on the cam, or timing chain is worn and jumped a tooth. I would check cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs first. Grab the distributor shaft while the rotor is off and check for side to side play. If that's good, disconnect the power from the distributor so the truck won't start. Pull the valve covers and watch the rockers while someone cranks the truck. If any aren't moving as much, your cam is junk. You can watch while it's running if you're alone, but it makes a mess.

You can cut a 2" strip off the top of an old pair of valve covers so you can run the motor to check the valve train without making a mess.
