Here's how to add a smog/air pump to your engine

There are several write-ups on how to remove the smog pump from you engine -- easy peasy.

The real challenge is to ADD the smog pump back in. Very few are brave or handsome enough to achieve such a feat.

In Arizona you can wear a gun on your hip everywhere you go, even into your bank, no problem. However, the civil liberties begin to dwindle when you try to get your ol' Chevy truck to pass emissions. When it comes to emissions, Arizona seems to be catching up to the Socialist Republic of California.

So, to pass the Visual Inspection portion of the emissions beauty pageant, I must have a smog pump, charcoal canister, and connected ventilation between cylinder heads.

I have everything but the smog pump.

Currently, I have a gm (crate) 350 5.7 TBI (1987-1995) engine inside of a 1984 Suburban.

Steps:

1) Add smog pump to belt system
- I need to install a new bracket to hold the pump
- I need a new belt (I'll use trial-and-error to get the best size)

2) Add air injection valve and hoses to the pump and connecting to the TBI's vacuum system
- I can't find the correct valve anywhere, so I'm not sure what I'll do here

3) Add air injection pipes to the existing exhaust headers
- I currently have Hedman headers, and the sell an "easy to install" kit for adding smog pieces to their headers. Their "easy to install" instructions include skilled welding -- not just sloppy welding will do; these pipes have tiny holes.

Anyway, I've ordered the new bracket and I'll be posting photos as I go. :-)

That all sounds like a giant pain in the neck but, probably something many of us will have to refer to in the future to be compliant to pass inspection.

I would just go to a "pick a part", get everything you need off a complete truck including the AIR exhaust manifolds and be done with it. Does your motor have a single serpentine belt, several V belts, or a combination of them?

Step 1: Park your truck in a comfortable place

Step 2: Remove everything attached to the drive belt, except the water pump. Here you can see I was able to leave the radiator hoses in place, and simply maneuvered the a/c compressor out of the way with the a/c hoses still attached. I did the same with the power steering pump -- still attached, just out of the way a little. I guess the only things to actually come out were the fan, the alternator and the tensioner.



Here I am pulling out the bracket that holds them all in place.



I got the one on the left off of ebay. Notice the section on the far left that holds the air pump.



And here's the new one with the a/c bracket moved over. I also have a few other things to attach to it. I have no idea how these are supposed to fit to this thing with the air pump attached. It's going to be a fun puzzle. :-)
