OEM Radio - Tuner knob inoperable.
« on: April 10, 2017, 06:58:45 pm »
Howdy again all.
So I'm driving the old truckster and decide to switch on the tunes for some AM talk radio.
Powers up just fine and actually jumps to the preset frequencies that were set 20 years ago before it went to sleep in a barn.

Unfortunately, those stations are for OK. and fail to render an audible signal here in Pensacola FL.

So I twist the tuner knob and notta, it doesn't modulate the frequency. :'(

Does anyone know a how to for fixing that or is it time to go with a 'Retro Sound' swap?
** I would prefer to leave this thing stock, I like it just the way it is (as long as it functions) but I also understand that electronics were never meant to last 30+ years. **

I did a search for tuner but received 1 page of results that aren't related to this particular issue.
Thanks again, I've harvested many a helpful thread from here along with tips from live folk!

You didn't say how old your truck is. The older tuners had a gear driven cage that slid ferrite bars into coils to tune them. The ones I have seen had a little slip clutch on the tuner shaft before the gears. Maybe you should pull the radio and take the back off and see if things are free and have not set up inside and the slip clutch is slipping when you try to tune.

Best advice I could give it eBay.  Some go for very little especially AM only if that is what you want if you just have one dash speaker.  You could opt to go big time and get an AM-FM mono radio.

Plenty on ebay, i got a nice clean one for about $60. OEM 70's delco for truck.

Although, i would love modern features. I may swap someday to a retro.
