Unplug the brake light switch and recheck the white wire.

It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it.
In other words... if people learn by making mistakes, by now I should know just about everything!!!

I think I figured the problem out. White brake switch wire was shorted/melted together with orange hazard light wire behind fuse box.
