Building a 350, need opinions
« on: February 01, 2006, 11:59:00 am »
I have found the engine that I am going to rebuild for my '78.  It is a 1994 Chevrolet truck block (suffix FSB) 350ci Std. bore, 4 bolt main.  The thing was free because it had been rebuilt at one point with a 1974 rotating assembly which had been overrevved to the pint of ruinging the cam, lifters, and timing set and then spinning three rod bearings and turning the bottom of the rods blue from the heat.  I threw all of this out.  I have a good forged steel crank and GM rods at home that I will be using.  The bore was 2 thousandths under std still and round, so it will be a hone and go with flat tops and moly rings.  I have 2 sets of heads, my 53cc 601 heads and some 76cc 624 heads.  I want around 10.73:1 compression.  Going to run a melling MTC-1 cam and moly rings and clevite bearings.  Any other advice?

Got the whole thing back at the house last night.  Got the crank, pistons, heads, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, timing set, timing cover, and balancer all installed and pre-set the valves.  I then installed the intake manifold and got it tightened down as well as the fuel pump shaft and cover.  I used Clevite ?Bearing Guard for all of the assembly, if it moves in that engine, it has the stuff on it.
Here are some pics of the truck before the work began, will try to get some posted of the aftermath.

Engine is now painted with Duplicolor Ceramic 1200 degree flat orange(2 cans) and 500 degree gloss chevrolet red-orange(1 can).  It looks really good.  I also put on my set of Edelbrock Elite aluminum valve covers this morning, cracked the flange on one while tightening it.

Engine is in the truck now.  It has the starter, headers, alt., ps pump, and all belts installed.  I even installed the aluminum dust cover that was off for 3 months.  Will be running Friday night.

Yeah, sorry about going so fast, but all of the parts just ended up falling into place as did the time and money, so, for fear that life was going to well to keep up for long, I went ahead and bought everything I needed while I could.
