Carb/Manifold question??
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:02:00 PM »
O.K. Here's my current dilemma...

1977 LWB 2WD 350/TH350

I've taken the plunge big time and ordered the GM350 HO, 330 HP/380 ft lbs torque crate motor with Vortec heads. I ordered the motor and all the accessories from Summit and I used the "suggested parts" feature of the website and ordered the Edelbrock RPM intake manifold, p/n EDL-7116 for Vortec heads rated at 1500 to 6500 rpm.

Here's where I ran into trouble. I already have a new  Edelbrock 600 CFM manual choke carb that I want to use on this new engine however the Performer RPM manifold suggests a 650 or better CFM carb. My options are to return the Performer RPM to Summit for the standard Performer EDL-2116 that seems to be more suited to the 600 cfm carb. My question is...?? can I just go ahead and use the Performer RPM manifold with the 600 cfm carb?? Is it possible that I will have too much manifold for the carb?? The cam is a dual pattern "mid-range" grind that I believe will be happy with 600 CFM carb. Yeah I know I could step up to a 750 CFM but this is a daily driver and I would rather "under-carb" than "over-carb". Please advise!!

Thanks

I may be wrong but what the heck.I believe with the smaller carb you will burn the same fuel as the larger carb if you are cruising around without gunning it like crazy. When the time comes that you want to have the performance, the 600 may not perform.

Thanks Pugsy

I'm thinking your right. Again, it's a daily driver and not going to see any track time (yet!) or heavy towing etc. I just want a high performance daily driver that I can romp on once in awhile. We have a local Mustang club here in town and it's kind of fun to get next to one of them at a light and chirp the tires on my old truck...

Well, how about it folks!! Is this carb too small for this manifold??

I look at it as, being a 350, they run on 600CFM for driving with no problems.  I would just keep the 600.

During idling and normal driving you wont notice any difference with the smaller carb, other then probably some better gas mileage.  But you will definetly get more HP and torq at the high end with the bigger carb.
