454 engine suffix codes
« on: October 10, 2006, 05:47:00 pm »
hello all,
I was given a 454 that was in running condition when the pickup it was in was wrecked. I am going to rebuild it and build it up some, better heads, pistons, intake, ect. and tuck it in my 83
I was looking for the engine codes to see what the estimated horsepower and general info is, but the only number I can find is cast in the block (not on a plate) above the timing chain cover. 396021F
the numbers are in the correct spot according to my information but the numbers don't match any suffix code info I can find.
Am I looking in the wrong spot?
any info will be appreciated.

Thank you

T

All 454 blocks are the same regardless of the suffix code.  It only tells you what it came out of and what the power rating was.  The internals are where the power numbers come from.

73-79 pickups with 454's peaked at 245hp and 365lb/ft of torque.  With the right combination of heads, cam, intake etc, you could be making 500hp easily.  Truck motors were designed for low rpm pulling.

Then engine suffix code will be stamped into the pad on the block where the head.
