77 gmc 350 engine running too fast?
« on: October 23, 2006, 10:37:00 am »
I dont drive this but once or twice a week to go to the lumber yard.  It starts up fine as usual, but now feels like its running hard/fast..  is this a timing issue?  ive only done small non engine fixes so dont be afraid of talking to me like im a child:lol .. thanks in advance.

Runnng hard and fast?  I am assuming you mean the RPMs stay up????

You say it starts up fine...the rpms should be high when you start and then once warm, the rpms should fall.  It seems you may have a problem w/ your carb and the high rpm kick down once warm.  Hot air choke?  Is the tube from exhaust manifold to air cleaner in place?  There is also a little tube that runs from choke coil down inside the intake and loops back up....the help warm up choke--near the egr.

carb idle adjustment correct?  It should be a little screw on your carb linkage on the carb intself....ever try turning that down (turn courter clockwise) to get the rpms low?

Next thing would be vacuum leak.  That would cause increased rpms.  spray wd40 all around the engine gaskets/vacuum hoses to try and find a leak. If rpms jump up w/ the wd40 spraying, you found a leak.

It could be your timing.  Do you have a timing light?  If not, you could loosen the distributor hold down bolt and play w/ the distributor a little at a time.  Turn dist. counterclockwise to advance the timing and see if rpms go down.  If so, don't do this too much w/out testing the performance. Make sure the engine doesnt knock when doing this under high acceleration under load--if so, back off a litte (retard the timing--turn clockwise).

IF all else fails, set timing to about 8 to 12 degrees advance with the distributor vaccum line unhooked and the carb plugged.  Then run it and see how it is.  If it is still fast, get in and stomp the pedal hard and fast one time.  That should kick it down.  If not, possible choke malfunction.

Sounds like a vacuum leak

The choke is going to be wide open once it has been running a couple of minutes.  If you stomp the gas, then rpms fall, it was the kick down.  that is normal, but you should  not have to really aggressivley kick the accelerator, it supposed to kick down under normal accelerator use.
