EFE Valve 1978 250 i6 with non integrated head
« on: September 01, 2020, 04:42:19 am »
Hi,
looking at my emission patch my truck has catalist, egr and efe.
I also have the efe valve at passenger side of the engine block, but there are no lines on, only closing rubber nipples.
I‘ve looked at the parts illustration catalog, but there‘s only a picture for E.F.E valve with integrated head. As I understand, the integrated head is only installed with california emission, right?

Has the non integrated intake manifold also an efe valve?
I haven‘t found any picture and also no offered parts for that.

An additional question, i have a catalist installed, but at rockauto they offer a pipe for install instead of it. Was the catalist not a must have in every us-state in 1978? If yes, in which state?

Regards
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes the Cat was required from '76 onward on all trucks.

If your country does not require the smog inspection you can remove it and install the straight through pipe.

You can also remove all the other smog components and cap off. Or just leave them and ignore them.

Tune your truck's carb and timing for optimal performance and enjoy!

Hi Johnny,

the problem in Germany is another. There are very strong rules if you want to get a historic licence plate. The Car must be original, only changes which are normal for this time period are allowed.
Wrong engine, not normal for this model - no chance. Modern wheels - no chance. The radio is too new - no chance! Tuning is allowed, but also only things which where normal for this decade.

So if I remove the cat, I habe to tell the test-person in which us-state this was no must have at this time. Otherwise, i‘ve got a problem.

Okay, i also could get a normal licence plate - then it‘s not so strong, but then the tax will be over 1.000$ a year.

Regards
Chris

I get it Chris, people with too much time on their hands, and a vested interest in getting more out of your pocket!

So look, Catalytic converters reduce the exhaust flow=less power. I don't think that matters with a IL6. It's not meant to be a performer, just a work horse.

I have seen guys bore out the cat and weld in a straight through pipe in the heart of the cat. A lot of work for little gain.

Keep reaching for your goal of a historic license plate, sounds like it will pay you in the end.

Hi Johnny,
I think your right.

The other question whit the EFE Valve, just saw I wrote it false. I have the EFE TVS at passenger side.
I‘m looking for information/pictures about EFE valve. I think, it‘s a vacuum valve, so it will be broken from time to time, but found nothing.
Any ideas?
I‘m not getting sad, if i don’t have it, but i‘m a very curious and inquisitive person...

Find a vacuum diagram for your truck, it will list the parts that make up the circuit.
