2wd to 4x4 swap- HELP!!
« on: August 16, 2005, 12:25:00 pm »
OK everybody,  here's a couple of questions I need help with.

I have an 84 3/4 ton 2wd and am buying a rolling chassis from a 84 3/4 ton 4x4 and want to make a 2wd into a 4x4.  I have 2 '80 parts trucks(a 2wd and 4x4)  I want to swap the 84 2wd front clip and cab onto the 4x4 chassis.

1 Do I need to cut/modify tranny tunnel since 2wd and 4x4 tunnels are different heights, or will a 3-4" body lift solve the clearance problem?

2 What, if any are the differences between a 3/4 2wd frame and a 3/4 ton 4x4 frame? ( for body mounts, rad support mount, tranny & t-case crossmembers etc.)

I am sure I have this answered somewhere, but

1) the bodylift will take care of the tranny clearance issues, but you can also cut a hole in the floor of the 4x2 if the 4x4 has the removable hump and bolt it to the 4x2 floor.

2)there are no different mounting locations for the frame or core support.  The Long beds did have the locations of the bed mount bolts move though.  You need to use the body bushings for the year frame you are using though.

As the 4x2 is a low hump, if it is an automatic anyway, if you simply cut your low hump out and bolt in the taller one, there will be a gap at the back.  The best idea, in my opinion would be to use the high hump as a template to cut the hole for the t-case shifter and the install a 2 or 3 inch body lift.  I am certain a 2 will work as I have done it myself.

Thanks guys.  I'll start measuring for both options as I'm not sure with the other mods I 'm considering which will give the better result.
