« on: March 11, 2006, 12:17:00 pm »
Does anyone have a Pre-82 12 Bolt rear, 2 piece driveline TH350 8FT Bed 2WD 1/2 Ton Truck could get me a Weld to Weld measurement on the rear half of the driveline??

Also let me know How long your tailshaft is? I am researching a tranny swap...

Some photos.Tranny is a 700.Didn't know what you are swapping to.Thought I'd include it just in case....
I took out a 350 from my 76 LWB 2WD

No cutting req'd. on this swap.
Hope this helps,

Thanks a bunch Pugsy!!! I think you just gave me everything I need.

What I will be doing is putting a 700R4 into a 79 with an 8FT bed that currently Has a TH400, 2 Piece Driveshaft, and a 12-bolt Rear. Trying to do it with existing parts and not cut or lengthen any shafts.

What I am trying to figure out is if all I need to put a 700R4 in the 79 and keep the 12 Bolt Rear end is the front driveshaft section from either a 8FT Bed 700R4 Truck or a 8FT Bed TH350 with 9" Tailshaft truck, or if I need to get both front and rear pieces from a Pre-82 9" Tail TH350 12 Bolt Axle 8FT bed truck.

In looking at the interchanges it looks like the rear sections for 8FT Bed 12 Bolt Trucks (Up to 81)  are the same for the TH400 and TH350. It also looks like the Front sections for the 8FT bed  trucks with a 700R4 or 9" Tail TH350 are the same from 77-87. I get into the interchange stuff at length here.
If I am looking at these two pictures below correctly than the rear section on yours measures about 34.5" Weld to weld, correct??

I just measured mine and it's 34.5" weld to weld.  From the rear weld to the rubber bushing on the driveshaft bearing it's 45".

So far it's looking like the rear sections on the 12 Bolt Axle 8FT bed trucks are the same. So all I will need is the front.  The interchange for the rear section on your 76 pulls up shafts from trucks all the way to 81, and the front section pulls up truck up to 77 so still not sure, because a search for a front section for an 85 brings up parts from trucks back to 75. So it seems there is allot of overlap and if the measurements are right it should work.

Would you mind grabbing the the measurement on yours from the From the rear weld to the rubber bushing on the driveshaft bearing when you get a chance.

Thanks a bunch!!

Center to center from u joints is 69-3/4" total and 37-3/4" on the back pce. which puts the front at 32" center to center. The front shaft is about 19-3/8" weld to weld.

Thank you so much, i just did the same for the sake of camprisons..

Like said ealier the from the rear weld to the bearing 45" (probably should have laid the tape measure the other way )

From the front weld on the rear drivehaft to the to the bearing is 10"

From the rear of the trans to bearing is just about 27 3/4" (pic was taken with me laying upside down.

In reading this page your front shaft should be about 2 inches shorter or 3" inches longer than mine depending on the tailshaft thats on my TH400 (forgot to measure it). According to this page 31 Spline is pretty rare. I have the 700R4 in my 85 right now and it had a 9" tail TH350 so i am going to guesss and say it 27 Spline.

Thanks again for the pictures, I'll have to get under it tomorrow and get some more measurements and do some more digging.

I found a Front Piece out of a 79 C-20 with a TH350 that is 19 1/4 Weld to Weld according to the yard that has it. Mine is a 21 3/4" weld to weld.

That sounds like it might do it for me. It's $25 so worth a shot.
