State inspection woes..
« on: May 08, 2006, 07:20:00 pm »
Well, I got the 78 put back together and running so I decided to take off school today to get it state inspected. I figured it'd go fine, except for maybe rear brakes. Come to find out, the place I took it to rejected it for exhaust, floor pans, brakes, emergency brake inproperly adjusted etc. The guy who inspected it told me the truck wouldn't ever make it through inspection, I needed a whole new cab. The cab is in WAY better shape then my 80, the pans are nearly flawless the cab corners and rocker panels are aswell.

I called my dad, and he totally disagreed with the guy who was inspecting it so he decided to take it himself to another shop, and let them look at it. Come to find out, the only thing that needed replacing was a driver-side lower balljoint.. I just finished putting it in, and will go back to the same shop tomorrow to get the sticker on it.

(virginia)

Anyone else had a similar experience, maybe the guy was just trying to take advantage of me?

In Maryland, you have to get a state inspection in order to get tags (not to renew them).  When I lived in VA for college, I had to get my '98 K1500 inspected yearly.  We also have emissions testing (VEIP) but the county I live in is exempt because its not in the "DC Metropolitan area".

I wouldn't think the shop would reject a truck for rusty floorpans/cab corners unless there was a big huge hole in it and it wasn't structurally safe.  With my '98, the inspection took only a few minutes (it was still fairly new), I didn't think it was that intensive.  Sounds to me like that place was prejudiced against old trucks and looking for any little thing to fail the inspection....

Where i live in mass you have to get yearly inspections for saftey and emissions... everything 1984 and newer has to pass emissions...and your only allowed to lift your truck 2'' above stock level but thats not really enforced alot...

Tell me about those darn Va "safety" state inspections.  Such a crock. I live in Richmond, and I have similar stories....just depends  who you take it to.  It is such a pain in the a...neck.  It's like $15 a pop, but taking off work to do it and getting shuttled around etc...Makes me wanna move to another state.

Even my 30' camper trailer, yes, every year.  It has brakes, gotta inspect it EVERY FREAKIN Year!!!! I don't put 200 miles a year on that joker, well, maybe 400 miles.

Back in my teenage days, which was quite a while ago, my ole 68 moostang failed once for the famous hole in the floor pan...sorta like flinstone..but not as bad.  I simply put layed some sheet metal under the carpet and back in business.

There are no emissions tests here in Richmond, but up north like Fairfax, outside of D.C., well everything must be just like when it came from the factory or else. It doesn't matter what year it was built in.

My sub gets inspected in June, my camper in May, my pickem up truck in September.   Constantly going to the dang shop for the inspections.

Do you know how hard it is to find a shop that will inspect a 30' camper????

Sorry, I my blood pressure goes up every time I think of this stuff.  DO NOT CONSIDER MOVING TO VA!!!!

now that i live in okie land i dont have to do the inspection thing, thankfully. but when i was in ft worth i did.  i had an old VW that didnt need emissions but needed a "safety" inspection. i took it to a shop that had the rep for passing anything. well when i got there they had fired the old guy and hired a guy who had just graduated "inspector school" two days before i got there. needless to say i didn't pass the first two times i tried. in texas at that time you had to go back to place who started the inspection. i was checked for steering lag and brake bleed off. everything. it started off bad when he was going to drive it, he was sitting in the drivers seat and asked for the key, i told him it was in the passenger seat. he then replied, there is nothing in that seat but a screwdriver. i said, exactly, thats the key. things went down hill from there.

In florida theres no such thing as a emissions inspection let alone a state inspection.I lived in rhode island up until 2002 and thats when the dang emissions systems was starting to kick in.My 1970 cougar was waived due to it had no emissions then. But our 1980 wouldn`t have passed if it was back to original cause it came w/ a straight 6 originally and now it has a 350.Theres no cat on the exhaust cause its running headers and straight pipes and mufflers, and theres no canisters on the radiator support like they once were.So its good to know at the time we couldve had my uncle just slap a inspection sticker on it and we moved in the nick of time...

thanks
