In a word, Yes.

Are you sure your guage in your cluster works first???

Of course, something in your transmission causes the little gear on the speedo cable to turn.  That something is a gear that is held by a clip on the tail shaft of the transmission. If that wasn't fastened correctly with the little clip, then, well, your speedo, odo, will not work.

The fix:  The tail end of the trans will have to be removed which means your driveshaft will have to be removed.  I have never done this with the trans in the vehicle, you may have to remove the crossmember, not sure. But, the shaft will have to be accessible, however you do it.  The gear is like a donut that slides over the shaft and is clipped in place.  I have pics of this at home on my computer (at work now) and will attach them when i get home.

You might want to verify if the drive gear has come loose before you start taking things apart.Remove the cable at the tranny, the single bolt holding the driven gear housing .Pull the housing with the driven gear out and check the drive gear to see if its secure or not.

It shouldn't leak too much fluid when you do this.
