Transmission Fluid

Ok, I am confussed - I have a 1986 Chevy C-10 and in my restoration, I am ready to put in transmission fluid.  My transmission is a 1979 TH400 and the dip stick says to use straight Dexron, but my 1986 owners manual says to use Dexron II.  Common sense tells me to use Dexron, but what is the difference between the two?

I don't think you can find Dexron anymore (or DexronII).  DexronVI is the newest formula (2005) and it can be used in all previous Dexron forumlas place.  I believe I read that DexronIII will cease production.

Your right on Chris. 

I talked to the transmission shop that rebuilt my Th400 and they told me Dexron III minimum and that Dexron VI can be used. 

After further research I discovered that Dexron III will be discontinued and that Dexron VI can be used for all other Dexrons.  This is after I posted this.  Should have done my research first - but glad to have the backup.
