Radio Craziness
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:06:58 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I have a weird Radio issue so please bear with me while I explain.   My truck came with a pioneer am/FM/CD player in the dash which was connected to an a/d/s amp and a pair of kicker enclosed boxes behind the seat...  Mind you the radio opening obviously was cut already and everything worked "fine"  I say that lightly because the sound quality was not great....

So anyway I had a Sony Xplod head unit and a Sony EQ and an Xplod amp that I wanted to swap in for better quality.  Well here is where the craziness begins.....

IF I wire up everything and leave the radio on the carpet or seat....( you know before a perm install) everything sounds great  Radio and Cd's   now when i mount everything into the dash.... the radio gives me nothing but static....  now If i take it back out and put it on the carpet or seat it's fine....

This leads me to believe that something is grounding out the radio NOT when i listen to a CD......  some type of metal to metal contact....  very weird as the other radio was in the dash just fine.....  I'm a bit perplexed..

any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Mike

the only thing that will cause this is a faulty antenna wire. maybe its not making a good connection once installed into the dash. ???

I would agree with you except the radio work fine out of the dash with the Sony or the Pioneer.... and in the dash fine with the pioneer only...  thanks for the suggest and I will check it anyway.....  but any other suggestions would be great.

thanks
Mike

perhaps try to put some electrical tape over all the metal that the head unit touvches...might work.

or maybe the annteanna cable doesnt work when it gets bent or something

It's been my experience that just because the antenna plug is in the dash, does not mean it's connected to anything at the other end.  It works fine on the seat because the radio signal is strong.  As soon as you put it in the dash, you lose signal.

Track the antenna start to finish.  Make sure the radio chasis is well grounded.  Adding an additional ground to the antenna plug can also help.

i went tot advanced and put a new antenna for 5 bucks, cut a whole in the fender and i have way better reception than with that window antenna. try that. the plug fits right through the hole in the firewall on the pass side.
