Q-jet.. Choke
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:16:23 pm »
Q-jet 1973 4mv on a 350
Ok to start the previous owner hack job the auto choke to a manual cable. so there are some parts missing.
It was a manifold mounted choke, im switching a after market manifold with no choke spot. So can i just remove the side choke gear stuff. This would in could the 2ndary lock out leaver and the little vacuum thing and plug the hole going in where the vacuum line enter the body. will this effect warm performance?

Beaver, Do you have a way to post a picture? I'm not sure I'm following you exactly. I believe you are talking about the choke pull-off ("vacuum thing"). Round little vacuum can on the Right front (some had a rear mounted one along with the front one), hose curving into the main body, linkage going to flap above the secondaries? If so, You need to leave it intact, this is what controls the opening rate of the secondary air flap. Without it, the air flap would just flop open as the throttle blades opened & "Quadra-bog" happens. The secondary lock-out lever can be removed (not the air flap link), if desired. I can post some pictures later if you need additional help. The Q-jet is a very good all-around carb when working properly, the problem is alot of people don't understand them, work on it & then complain/take it off thinking they are junk. If you need additional help, just ask, Lorne

ok, i put the thing back on and hooked up the linkage, heres a picture of it back on. I removed the 2ndary lock out leaver though.
One other thing, can i change out the air cleaner stud for a longer one?

Beaver, Yes that is the choke pull-off. One thing to check is that this unit is holding vacuum. Either use a hand held vacuum pump (give it a few pumps, the blade with the linkage should go in) let it set a few minutes to see if it holds or take the hose off of the carb, manually push the blade link part inward, then put your finger over the hose end, the link should stay in as long as your finger is on the hose. If not, replace the pull-off. Yes you can install a longer air cleaner stud.
