203 in a k-30?
« on: May 15, 2008, 06:04:12 pm »
Im lookin into buyin a pretty nice 79 K30, and the owner says it has a 203 in it. I didnt look at the knob on the shifter, but did note there are no lockouts. Ive never owned a truck that didnt have aftermarket lockouts already installed so im kinda clueless here.

I was also under the impression ALL 4wheel 1tons had a 205 in em?

So this leads to another question, what all is needed to put a 205 in, in place of a 203? The truck has a SB400, TH400, NP203 combo.

One quick way to tell if it's a 203, if there is no drain plug, it's probably a 203.  The 205s had the drainplug.

Here's some pics:

Not sure what it takes to swap in the 205.

If it has a Th400 in it, you'll need to find an NP205 that was originally mated to a TH400 or get a different one and swap out the input shafts which will require some maching as the TH400 input shafts are slightly larger. I've heard these original TH400 NP205s are pretty rare, check craigslist.

If it is in fact a 203, I would make sure that up front was a dana 60. Also, a 205 has a small, 3 bolt cover on the back between rear out put and front output cover.

I have never seen a 203 in a 1 ton, ever!
203 is easy to tell. They have an aluminum tail shaft housing. 205's are all cast iron.
